Ruby is the most valuable variety of the corundum mineral species, which includes blue sapphire.
It is considered one of the most valuable gems in coloured gemstones market.
In its original form, corundum is colourless; it is trace elements that intertwine with the corundum mineral that give it the different colours. With Ruby, it is the trace element chromium that gives the gemstone the colour red. The more chromium present, the more intense the colour.
The most valuable rubies have a deep, pure, vivid red.
Ruby is one of the hardest and toughest gemstones, which makes it an ideal gemstone for wearing everyday.
The name comes from the Latin word for rubber.
